Perry Sands

INDUCTED: 2004

Founder/Owner of Performance Machine, designer of Performance Machine disk brakes and innovator of custom and racing wheels.

Perry Sands is the founder and owner of Performance Machine, a manufacturer of innovative disc brake systems, custom wheels and performance accessories for motorcycles.

In the late 1960s the custom motorcycle market was taking hold in California. Motorcyclists who wanted a custom machine would seek out a builder, and Sands was a custom builder of note. Sands had an industrial arts background, and in 1970 he and his wife, Nancy, set up shop in Paramount, Calif. Part of their business included designing and producing custom parts such as sissy bars and front end assemblies.

A good builder is concerned about performance as well as style, and Sands found that some parts didn't perform up to his expectations. He began to design and build his own high-performance disc brake systems, which quickly became the preferred choice for custom motorcycles. Sands also developed brake systems for drag, flat-track and roadracing machines. His involvement in racing contributed to the growth and development of the Performance Machine product line, which expanded to include wheels and other performance accessories.

Early on, Sands recognized the need for state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, and Performance Machine became recognized as an innovator in the design, testing and production of aftermarket and custom parts. The company remains at the forefront of design and development.

Perry’s wife Nancy, daughter Summer, and son Roland are all part of the Performance Machine team. Roland also enjoyed a professional racing career and is the 1998 AMA 250 Grand Prix series champion.
